The method of treating periodontal disease depends upon the type of the disease and how far the condition has progressed. Methods of evaluation include:

PROBING

X-RAYS

A periodontal probe is used to measure the space between your tooth and gum to determine the extent of the disease.

Dental X-rays can also be used to determine whether or not bone has been damaged or destroyed.

There are several methods of treatment available depending upon the severity of the disease.

PLAQUE REMOVAL

SCALING

PLANNING

Brushing, flossing and professional cleaning help remove the plaque which causes gum disease. Plaque and tartar are scraped off the tooth's crown and roots. The rough surfaces of the root are smoothed, allowing the gum to heal.

FLAP SURGERY

REGENERATION

1) The gum is lifted from the tooth and bone so infection can be removed. The infected bone may also be reshaped.

2) After surgery, the gum is repositioned and sutured to hold it in place until it heals.

1) In some cases, destroyed tissue between teeth or roots can be partially regenerated.

2) Once the damaged area is prepared and special membranes are inserted, new tissue can grow over a period of weeks and months.
